From the September 16th to the 24th, Aleksandra Orłowska traveled to the United Kingdom, where she completed two short-term research internships. The first took place at the University of Exeter. At the Wildfire Lab, under the supervision of Claire Belcher and Sara Baker, Aleksandra conducted experiments using a microcalorimeter, burning samples of plants belonging to Australian species. The results will serve as comparative material for the research carried out as part of her doctoral dissertation. Aleksandra then traveled to Scotland, where, at the University of Aberdeen and with the assistance of Thomas Theurer and Dmitri Mauquoy, she had the opportunity to learn Raman spectroscopy, one of the main methods she will use in her future work. During her time in the British Isles, she also found time to explore some of the most scenic corners of the UK. On Aleksandra’s behalf, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for the exceptionally warm welcome at both research centers. We hope this trip will be the fruitful beginning of further collaboration!
The trip was funded by a small grant awarded in the UGrants START competition, organized at the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography (pol. Wydział Oceanografii i Geografii).
