Publication in Boreas – varves in Argentina

Strona główna publikacji

A new paper co-authored by Wojciech Tylmann has appeared in Boreas, focusing on the varved sediments of proglacial Lago Frías in the North Patagonian Andes (Argentina). Radiometric dating, tephra layers and varve counting on computed tomography images yielded a chronology for 1960–2019 and a floating chronology for 1803–1893, separated by a tephra from the 1893 eruption of Volcán Calbuco and a mass-wasting deposit linked to the Great Chilean Earthquake of 1960. On an annual basis the temperature control on varve thickness proved weak, and paleoclimate interpretation is still a complex task.
