World Earth Day at CZRUG

Maurycy Żarczyński na tle slajdu

On April 22, we celebrated World Earth Day. The Centre for Sustainable Development of the University of Gdańsk organized an event aimed at secondary school students and university students alike. The Prof. Janusz Sokołowski Auditorium, located in the Main Library, was filled with young attendees who had the opportunity to listen to a series of short lectures.

Topics covered included planetary boundaries, bird migration, the role of light in Earth’s well-being, and the role of psychology in understanding the planetary crisis. Among the speakers was Maurycy Żarczyński, who delivered a lecture titled “Footprints on the Bottom – Humans in the Memory of Lakes” (pol. „Ślady stóp na dnie – ludzie w pamięci jezior”), in which he explained what paleolimnology is, what methods it employs, and presented examples of human impact recorded in the sediments of Polish lakes.

In addition, a large group of our seminar participants and members of the Student Geographical Research Club organized a booth where secondary school students and students from other faculties could learn more about studying geography.
